Nathanael Schmidt-Ott joined the ETH Development Economics Group (DEC) in November 2024. He is interested in exploring the use of remote sensing data, volunteered geographic information, and text data to estimate and understand socio-economic outcomes. For processing these data, he carefully applies and evaluates machine and deep learning algorithms.
Nathanael holds a master’s degree in applied statistics from the University of Göttingen, where he specialized in machine learning, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Heidelberg. Between his studies, he gained practical experience working with several institutions, including the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), the Center for Evaluation and Development (C4ED), and the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research (RWI).
Outside of work, Nathanael enjoys spending time in the mountains, in the woods, or on the football field.
